At the Movies Episode 57: The Dark Tower

Stephen King’s Dark Tower cycle is — not to put too fine a point on it — probably the most important book series Blake and Erin have ever read. Does Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey’s new film measure up, or has director Nikolaj Arcel forgotten the face of his father? After a spoiler-free zone, the Petits get spoiler-heavy on their thoughts about the film and the books.

And what’s cool this week? Erin’s on a Dark Tower-adjacent reread of both It and Insomnia, and a binge-watch of Bob’s Burgers, while Blake wants everyone out there to pick up DC’s Super Sons.

Is it true? Can it be? Are Blake and Erin back on the microphone, talking about the big summer movie releases for 2017? Join us as we walk through the next few months at the cinema, as well as explain where they’ve been for so long.

And what’s cool this week? Erin is still in the midst of a Dark Tower re-read, and Blake throws his support behind the relaunch of Mystery Science Theater 3000 and the Batman/Flash crossover The Button!

At the Movies Episode 52: Doctor Strange

After a long (and unplanned) hiatus, Blake, Erin, and Kenny are back to review the latest Marvel film, Doctor Strange. How does Scott Derrickson’s film live up to Stan Lee and Steve Ditko’s second-most-famous creation? Does Benedict Cumberbatch earn a place among the MCU’s greats? And will Blake ever learn to pronounce Chiwetel Ejiofor?

And what’s cool this week? Kenny is all about The Flash Season 3, Erin is reading Stephen King’s The Dark Tower and Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander, and Blake’s unabashed love for DC Rebirth continues with Flash #9.

Episode 311: Wizard World New Orleans 2015

The convention tour has started again, and this week the Showcase gang walks the floor of Wizard World New Orleans 2015. Blake, Erin, Mike and Kenny talk about some of their finds, the challenge of collectible-diving, and ask the true burning question: are we reaching a saturation point for comic book conventions?

And what’s cool this week? Mike is making his way through Dexter and Batman: Zero Year, Kenny is a fan of Gotham, Erin reading Tale of the Body Thief and watching Breaking Bad, and Blake had fun with Ant-Man #1.

Episode 59: Western Comics

This week, as per your requests, the guys dive into Western Comics! Why does Blake love them? Why doesn’t Chase? We touch upon great western heroes from Jonah Hex to Bat Lash to The Lone Ranger to Zorro to less orthodox western yarns like Preacher, The Ballad of Sleeping Beauty, The Kents and The Dark Tower. (And if you want our thoughts on the new Zorro comic, check our our mini-Episode 58.5.) After a feedback-sparked debate about the quality of children’s comics, the guys get to this week’s picks. Blake chimes in for Fantastic Comics #24 — the beginning of The Next Issue Project — and Chase starts to celebrate Fantastic Four #554… until he remembers reading it.
