Episode 140: The Universal Frankenstein
The Halloween Spooktacular continues with a movie marathon! Blake, Kenny and Mike sit down for a screening of six classic films featuring the Universal Studios Frankenstein characters! Listen in for our thoughts on Frankenstein (1931), Bride of Frankenstein (1935), Son of Frankenstein (1939), Ghost of Frankenstein (1942), House of Frankenstein (1944), and of course, the horror classic Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948). As we roll into October, the Halloween Spooktacular is again upon us! The Showcase is undergoing some big changes this week, but Blake and Kenny sit down to talk about the immortal lord of the night, Count Dracula, from his classic movies, the legendary Tomb of Dracula comic, and his appearances in the DC Multiverse and elsewhere. The guys also talk about the rest of the Count’s vampire bretheren, some great vampire novels and comics from recent years, and desperately look for a way to save the Noble Nosferatu from being Twilight-ized. In the picks this week, Kenny goes with Blackest Night #3, and Blake takes the upcoming prose book Peter and Max: A Fables Novel. The boys delve into Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon‘s epic saga, including the origins of Jesse Custer and company, their first encounters with the Grail and Jesse’s family, and the birth of Arseface. In the picks this week, Blake loves G-Man: Cape Crisis #1, and Chase surprises even himself by picking Blackest Night: Superman #1.

Creator spotlight week brings us to the works of J. Michael Straczynski! The guys discuss the early TV work on cartoons like Masters of the Universe and The Real Ghostbusters, his career-making turn on Babylon 5, and his journey through comics beginning with Rising Stars and Midnight Nation, through Spider-Man and Thor, and his current place reimagining the Red Circle. Geek Christmas comes once again, as the Showcase boys go to Free Comic Book Day 2009! The guys camped out at BSI Comics in Metairie, Louisiana for the day, talking to the fans, handing out free comics, and generally having a blast! In this episode, the guys manage to find time to talk about Blackest Night #0 and this week’s Final Crisis: Legion of 3 Worlds #4, they go through a few more of this year’s free samplings, and host the first-ever live Ask Chase Anything Challenge! Listen as fans of all ages try to summon a question Chase can’t answer, hear the one question that succeeded, and witness the beginning of Chase’s potential intellectual property lawsuit when a bad joke goes horribly awry! And if that wasn’t enough, the guys find time to talk to Kurt Amacker, writer of the new Seraphemera Books horror comic Dead Souls! How good is Dead Souls? It’s Alan Moore-approved!

Episode 99: 2008-The Year in Review
2008 ends in just days, folks, so let’s go out with a Showcase blowout! Joined by back-up geeks Mike and Kenny, the boys announce the winners of the Best of 2008 awards, as voted on by you! Then, it’s a long talk about everything that happened in comics in 2008! The Dark Knight, the rise of Marvel Studios, Diamond refuses to distribute Hack/Slash, Archie goes back to ninth grade, and a heck of a lot more. This double-sized episode is the longest Showcase ever (we promise we won’t make a habit of it)! And instead of our usual picks of the week, stay tuned as our four guys pick their favorite comic books of the entire year! Next week will be the 100th Episode Spectacular!
